A woman was shot by police Tuesday afternoon at a beachfront park after she charged at officers with a knife, the Ormond Beach Police Department said.
Police said the shooting happened at Andy Romano Beachfront Park at Milsap Road and South Atlantic Avenue.
Police said they responded before 4 p.m. after a Community Service Officer called for backup after investigators said a woman started hitting his car and made threats about having weapons. After the CSO followed the woman, officers said she jumped on the hood of the car and then fled to her own vehicle, using it to ram the CSO’s vehicle repeatedly.
When officers arrived, they said the woman got out of her vehicle holding a knife. Police said the woman charged toward two officers with the knife above her head. That’s when police said an officer shot toward the woman.
Police said the woman continued toward officers, and a second round of gunfire was fired, hitting the woman.
Police said the officers on scene immediately began rendering aid to the woman, who was taken to the hospital.
Police said no officers were injured and that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be investigating the shooting, which is standard practice for officer-involved shootings.
Police asked residents to avoid the area to give detectives space to investigate the shooting and time to clear the scene.
