What’s the hype about “Wordle” all about? Photo: Screenshot powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/, 01/14/2022 A free puzzle game is conquering the online world: Wordle. How it works and where the hype comes from – we explain it. Whether it’s Twitter, Instagram or other social media: Gray, yellow and green boxes are currently appearing everywhere with which users want to share their success. To be precise: your success in the online game “Wordle”. Whether in the USA, Great Britain or Germany: the Internet game has been on everyone’s lips for a few days – probably mainly thanks to the minimalist game principle. “Wordle”, as some might assume, is not a Swabian word, but probably a Combination of the English “Word” and the inventor’s last name, “Wardle”. Wordle is about guessing words. Or rather: a word every day. Because that’s all there is to the original version of Wordle. At the beginning, the player receives 5 gray boxes that must be filled with an English word. The game then indicates whether the letter:
Now you have 6 attempts to find the word of the day. There is no second attempt or a new word – only the next day. Some players immediately notice the similarity to the logic game “Mastermind”, which works on a similar principle. A certain color sequence must be found out by successive guesses. It was one of the most popular games in the world in the 1970s. Wordle was invented by Josh Wardle back in 2020 during the lockdown. It was originally planned as a gift for his partner and was initially only played by the two of them. Wardle’s partner then contributed a list of 2500 English words that can be typed into the game. Josh Wardle is no stranger to the internet: he caused quite a stir with his actions “The Button” (2015) and “Reddit Place” (2017). After Wardle put the game online, he also added a feature that allows players to share their game success in the form of colorful boxes without revealing the word of the day.
Wordle alternatives are partially deleted
The original Wordle game is free for the browser. It is not available for download as an app or in any other form. Resourceful business people who want to benefit from the current hype have of course already copied Wordle’s very simple gameplay and offered paid apps in the Google and Apple app stores. The apps, which were sometimes offered for annual fees of 30 dollars, were partly deleted from the app stores. However, there are still a few Wordle alternatives available as an app. As a rule, you can play as many puzzles in one go as you want and not all apps are chargeable. But the original Wordle version is the browser game.
Is there Wordle in German?
The Wordle game that is currently so hyped works exclusively with English words. But of course there are word and logic puzzles with German words that can be just as much fun and usually contain more than one puzzle per day. Examples of these apps include Word Guru, Word Cross, and Word Blitz. However, they all work according to slightly different game principles than Wordle. Who knows – maybe it won’t be long before a German version of Wordle appears on the web.
