They sent a signal against opponents of vaccination: the police encircled Dresden medical students - politics

With a large contingent, the Saxon police tried on Thursday evening to prevent an unannounced march by opponents of vaccination and conspiracy ideologues in Dresden. They had previously mobilized via the messenger service Telegram to the university hospital in the Saxon state capital. From there, a demonstration disguised as a “walk” was to start. In particular, the right-wing extremist group “Freie Sachsen” had campaigned intensively for the meeting place in the days before. With more than 1000 emergency services, the officials were present in the Dresden city area in the evening, including hundreds from Thuringia and Berlin as well as heavy equipment such as water cannons and armored clearing vehicles.[Wenn Sie alle aktuellen Entwicklungen zur Coronavirus-Pandemie live auf Ihr Handy haben wollen, empfehlen wir Ihnen unsere App, die Sie hier für Apple- und Android-Geräte herunterladen können.]But not only the police, but also students of medicine and dentistry at the Technical University of Dresden wanted to counteract the march of anti-vaccination measures in front of the clinic. The students were called on via the student council’s Instagram account to send a “silent sign against scientific denial and right-wing hate speech”. At the same time, the protest should be understood as solidarity with the staff and the patients of the clinic. Around 6:15 p.m., dozens of students in white doctor’s coats formed in front of the hospital premises and expressed their protests against the Corona demonstrators with cardboard signs they had made themselves. What happened next caused a wave of outrage on social media. While the police and hundreds of anti-vaccination opponents were playing a game of cat-and-mouse through Dresden and the officials had difficulty preventing the unannounced meeting, some of the counter-demonstrators were surrounded around 7:45 p.m. The accusation: Violation of the Saxon Corona Ordinance and the Assembly Act. The student council had previously called for the medical students to split up into groups of people, since the current Saxon Corona Ordinance only allows meetings with ten participants.

Police officers would have rated doctor’s coats as prohibited uniforms

Nevertheless, 22 administrative offenses were reported against the counter-demonstrators, as the Saxon police announced in the evening. Several students also report to the Tagesspiegel that individual police officers were bothered by the white doctor’s coats, as they allegedly violated the ban on wearing uniforms at demonstrations. The police contradict this. The ban on uniforms was “out of the question,” the press office wrote on Twitter. On the same platform, those affected by the measure let their frustration run free: “After just an hour, the civil courage of us medical students was completely dissolved with the accusations that we were uniforming ourselves and were expelled from the place,” writes a Dresden student. And further: “I want to hear another one who is surprised that no more MedStudis want to come to Dresden”. Meanwhile, hundreds of users also reported on Twitter in the evening, who agreed to take on the impending fines for the medical students. At the same time, the hashtag #Woellerruecktret is trending, demanding the resignation of the Saxon Minister of the Interior, Roland Wöller (CDU). Overall, a large, central elevator was successfully prevented and the operation of the university hospital was secured, the authority determined. Three criminal charges were filed for insult and three for resistance to law enforcement officers. In addition, there were over 200 administrative offense reports for violations of the Saxon Corona Ordinance.
