“The numbers will fall significantly in the next two to three weeks”

January 15, 2022 – 8:08 a.m. The number of new corona infections in Germany continues to skyrocket and the seven-day incidence reaches a new record almost every day. But we shouldn’t panic right away, says doctor and medical journalist Dr. Christopher Specht. In an interview with n-tv, he explains why it is difficult to use the seven-day incidence as a guideline and why he believes that the corona numbers will soon drop significantly again.

The conditions are different everywhere

according to dr According to Christoph Specht, it is a mistake to assess the current situation based on the seven-day incidence, because after all there are different requirements for the tests within the countries alone: ”Tests are carried out differently, people go to the tests differently, some countries have free ones, in other countries you have to pay for them. In Germany we are probably a bit behind when it comes to collecting the numbers.” And in his opinion, they will increase even further and Omikron will continue to assert itself, as he reveals in an interview with n-tv.

“We don’t have to be completely virus-free”

This is how the development looks at the moment. According to the doctor, letting yourself be driven crazy by the seven-day incidence is exactly the wrong way: “Six months ago we agreed that the incidence would not help. At that time there was no talk of omicron, now we’re doing exactly the same thing again: we’re just looking at the incidence. That’s a mistake.” It should also not be the goal for everyone to be completely “virus-free”, because that’s not what our society was like before the pandemic: “We deal with viruses every day. If we were to test for other viruses, including those who have been with us for a long time, then we would always have positive test numbers in the population. This will also be the case with Sars-CoV-2, at least in the coming winters. We have to free ourselves from that. In principle, it is not bad with viruses living together, we’ve been doing it for thousands of years. We’ll be fine with Sars-CoV-2, too. We now have a chance to enter that phase.”

Omicron should not be underestimated

However, this is not to say that we should no longer see Corona as a danger, because according to Dr. Despite everything, Specht should not underestimate the omicron variant: “People will continue to die from it in the future. That was also the case with other viral infections and it will be the same here in the future. Just not at all on the scale that we have been up to now have seen.” In view of the currently high number of infections, he is certain: “The numbers will fall in the spring. I even expect that the omicron numbers will fall significantly in the next two to three weeks.” (cheese)
