Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – The trade unions in Saxony-Anhalt called for more social and financial appreciation for women on International Women’s Day this Tuesday. Various campaigns across the country are intended to draw attention to the demands of women. Clubs, associations and women’s initiatives invite, among other things, to exhibitions, readings and discussions about current gender politics, as the organizers announced. This includes equal pay for equal work. According to the Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB), more than every third full-time woman in Saxony-Anhalt works in the low-wage sector. “Where a full-time job is hardly enough to live on, a part-time job becomes very tight,” warned Susanne Wiedemeyer, head of the DGB in Saxony-Anhalt. More and more working women face poverty in old age. The trade unionist demanded that this change urgently. International Women’s Day has been celebrated since 1911. On this day, attention is drawn to women’s rights and gender equality worldwide. According to the State Statistical Office, women earned an average of EUR 17.31 gross per hour in Saxony-Anhalt in 2021, and the average gross hourly wage for men was EUR 18.69 per hour thus 1.38 euros more. One reason for the gender pay gap is that there are still fewer women in management positions than men.© dpa-infocom, dpa:220308-99-428136/2
