Russia is suspending foreign currency trading until September 9, the Central Bank of Russia announced. From March 9 to September 9, “banks cannot sell foreign currency to citizens,” a statement said. However, foreign currency can still be exchanged for rubles. No more than $10,000 may be withdrawn from foreign currency accounts. Payments will only be made in dollars, regardless of the currency in which the deposits are held. In the face of the massive Western economic sanctions imposed over the Russian offensive in Ukraine, the central bank had already suspended stock exchange trading earlier this month and announced a number of other measures with which it wants to cushion the economic consequences of the sanctions on the financial market.
