North Rhine-Westphalia: Corona: Omikron is now responsible for three quarters of the infections

Status: 01/14/2022 10:19 a.m

The fifth corona wave is building up: the number of infections is reaching new record levels, Omikron is the dominant variant. The number of intensive care patients, on the other hand, continues to fall.

How contagious the omicron variant of the corona virus is can be seen from the figures from the RKI: In the 49th calendar week of 2021, which ended with the third Sunday in Advent, its share in Germany was 2.4 percent of all sequenced infections. In the first calendar week of 2022, it already accounted for 73.3 percent nationwide.

NRW: Omikron accounts for three quarters of the cases

The regional differences are large. While the Omikron share in Bremen is 96.2 percent, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania it is only 10.6 percent. In the east, in addition to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are the only four federal states in which Omikron is not (yet) dominant. With a share of 75.8 percent, North Rhine-Westphalia is just above the national average. According to the RKI, there are several explanations for the fluctuations and differences. The tests for variants in the individual federal states vary in intensity, and there are also delays in the collection and transmission of the laboratories. Since the employees in the heavily used laboratories are also affected by the high rate of infection, there are restrictions on test capacities, the RKI conceded. In addition, the variant spreads faster from metropolitan areas.

Studies: Omikron ensures fewer hospital stays

According to the RKI, initial studies indicate that Omikron causes fewer hospital stays in those who are fully vaccinated and boosted. The occupancy numbers in the intensive care units are currently still declining, but the treatment “remains high”. According to the DIVI intensive care register, 2,959 Covid patients were treated in intensive care units on Thursday. The numbers have been falling since autumn 2021. RKI President Lothar Wieler, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) and virologist Christian Drosten want to comment on the current corona situation at a joint press conference on Friday at 1 p.m. In our Corona live ticker you can follow the press conference in the live stream.
