It could soon become expensive for many motorists in the Hohenlohe district and throughout Germany if they do not comply with a new regulation. The deadline is at the end of January. Who is affected: Anyone who wants to drive a car, truck or motorcycle in Germany needs it – a driver’s license. The driver’s license for all these vehicles currently comes in different colors and shapes, because in recent years it has undergone a transformation from a paper “rag” to a modern, counterfeit-proof check card. However, while newer driver’s licenses already have an expiration date, older models appear to be valid for life. But that is deceptive.
Exchange driver’s license: Drivers must now pay attention to the expiry date
As the district office of the Hohenlohe district now reminds again, the EU directive 2006/126/EG now applies. This states that all driving licenses must be exchanged for an EU driving license card by 2033. All driver’s licenses issued before January 19th, 2013 are affected by this mandatory exchange. This is to ensure that all driving licenses that are still in circulation in the EU have a uniform and forgery-proof model. But who now has to exchange their “rag” – and who doesn’t?
Exchange driver’s license: Drivers must now comply with these deadlines
In the case of driving licenses issued before December 31, 1998, the year of birth of the holder of the driving license is decisive. Particularly urgent here: driver’s licenses for all district residents who were born between 1953 and 1958. For them, the exchange period expires on January 19, 2022.
|Before 1953tttt||January 19, 2033|
|1953 to 1958tttt||January 19, 2022|
|1959 to 1964||January 19, 2023|
|1965 to 1970||January 19, 2024|
|1971 and later||January 19, 2025|
In the case of newer driving licenses issued after January 1st, 1999, the year of birth of the driving license holder no longer applies, but the year of issue. However, it will only get really interesting in January 2026 – then driving licenses from the years 1999 to 2001 are due – and the staggering is continuous from then until the year 2033.
|1999 to 2001||January 19, 2026|
|2002 to 2004||January 19, 2027|
|2005 to 2007t||January 19, 2028|
|2008||January 19, 2029|
|2009||January 19, 2030|
|2010||January 19, 2031|
|2011||January 19, 2032|
|2012 to January 18, 2013||January 19, 2033|
Incidentally, anyone who does not exchange their driving license in good time does not automatically lose their driving license – only the “rag” loses its validity. This means that the driver’s license can also be subsequently extended, but anyone who is caught with the expired driver’s license has to pay a fine.
Exchanging a driver’s license: This is how it works in the Hohenlohe district
In the Hohenlohe district, you can apply for a driver’s license exchange at the mayor’s office or directly at the driver’s license office of the Hohenlohe district district office – applicants need a current biometric passport photo, the current driver’s license and a valid ID document. All newly issued driver’s licenses are automatically limited to 15 years – then the driver’s license must be renewed again.Note from the district office of HohenlohekreisThe driving license office is open Monday to Wednesday and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Thursday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. If you have any questions, the employees at the driving license office are available on Tel. 07940 18-1500. But drivers should note other rule changes in 2022, including two items that will soon have to be added to the first aid kit. In addition, there are now blatant rules for radar detectors in vehicles.
