– The symptoms of a corona infection are well known after two years of the pandemic: cough, runny nose and an impairment of the sense of smell and taste are among them. Now doctors have found a new symptom that has little to do with the known signs of the disease. As the Ärztezeitung reports, fainting spells can also indicate a corona infection. This connection became known in a 35-year-old man who came to a Berlin hospital because of repeated fainting spells after getting up from a lying position. After a comprehensive examination, the doctors determined that a corona infection had triggered the circulatory disorder in the man. In the report, the doctors speak of a clear connection between the fainting spells and the Covid infection. They cite the “reproducible circumstances under which the syncope manifests, the clear chronological correlation of the symptoms with the SARS-CoV-2 infection and the absence of properties indicative of a structural heart disease” as justification. dr Hinrich Schroer and his team then put a temporary pacemaker in the patient to hold back the fainting spells.
Study confirms suspicion: connection between Covid-19 and syncope
Cardiologists have reported similar cases in the past. These syncopes – this is what fainting spells are called in medicine – were also found in long-Covid patients.
In August 2021, researchers from Portugal, Spain and Italy found in a meta-study with 14,438 people infected with corona that 4.2 percent of those examined (604 cases) experienced fainting or the feeling of impending unconsciousness in the early stages of the disease. According to the study, people over the age of 60 were particularly affected, and there were also a few cases in the age range between 40 and 60. Therefore, syncope should be taken seriously as an early warning sign of a corona infection.
Exact cause of fainting spells still unclear
The exact cause of the unconsciousness is still unclear. One assumption of the doctors is a connection with high blood pressure or antihypertensive drugs (beta-blockers). Diabetes, obesity or a lipid metabolism disorder in combination with a corona infection could also lead to this.
