Corona virus in Germany: more than 90,000 new infections for the first time

The incidence has reached a new high of 470.6. With 92,223 cases, the RKI also registered a maximum number of new infections. The clinics warn against overloading – because the omicron variant now also dominates in this country.

The number of new corona infections transmitted to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day exceeded the threshold of 90,000 cases for the first time. According to the RKI, the health authorities reported 92,223 cases within 24 hours. Only the day before had the number of new infections reached a new high of 81,417 cases. A week ago, 56,335 new infections were recorded, with gaps in tests and reports over the course of the holidays.

tagesschau 4:57 a.m., January 14th, 2022 The seven-day incidence also reached a new high of 470.6. The previous day the value was 427.7. A week ago, the nationwide incidence was 303.4 (previous month: 375.0). The previous peak was reached with an incidence of 452.4 on November 29, 2021.

More than 7.8 million corona infections

According to the new information, 286 further deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 264 deaths. The number of people who died from or involved a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 115,337. The RKI has counted 7,835,451 infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected. The RKI put the number of people who had recovered at 6,914,700. In November, the federal and state governments had defined the so-called hospitalization incidence as the decisive benchmark for tightening corona measures: the number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days. The RKI gave the value as 3.09 (previous day: 3.13).

Omicron has supplanted Delta

The number of people treated in intensive care units has fallen just below the 3000 mark for the first time since mid-November, according to data from the DIVI intensive care register. However, experts see no reason to give the all-clear for the coming weeks due to the expected further spread of the omicron variants of the corona virus. As the RKI reported in its current weekly report, the highly contagious omicron variant is now also the dominant variant of the corona virus in Germany. Accordingly, the proportion of all cases transmitted in the first calendar week of this year was 73.3 percent. Last week, Omikron’s share was 44.3 percent. The RKI writes that the fifth wave of the pandemic began in Germany with the spread of the more contagious variant.

DKG expects heavy loads from normal wards

The head of the German Hospital Society (DKG), Gerald Gass, fears that the normal wards in the clinics will be heavily burdened in view of the increasing number of corona infections. “The increasing number of infections will inevitably make itself felt in the hospitals,” Gass told the editorial network Germany. Resident doctors would have to treat their patients more on an outpatient basis in order to avoid hospitals being overwhelmed, said Gass. The hospitals also fear that there will be more staff shortages with the omicron virus variant.

Federal Council discusses new quarantine rules

In order to keep important supply areas, especially critical infrastructure, running, even if the number of infected people is rising sharply, the federal and state governments had agreed on shorter quarantine and isolation times. According to this, infected people and contact persons can usually test themselves freely after seven days using a PCR test or a certified rapid test, thus shortening the period by three days. After the Bundestag – which passed the ordinance on Thursday evening – the Bundesrat is now dealing with the new rules. Ultimately, they are then implemented by the federal states. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach also wants to give an up-to-date assessment of the spread of the omicron variant. In addition to the SPD politician, RKI President Lothar Wieler and the Berlin virologist Christian Drosten want to speak at the federal press conference.

@Eres – self-protection instead of rushing

09:36 from Eres: “So keep walking around, spread omicron and wait and see how many you can bring to the intensive care unit.” _ I dare the thesis that of the 92,223 new infections reported today, not a single one took place on such a “walk”. _ But anyone who has a clear image of the enemy will certainly not be disturbed by reality…
