Whether you are installing a chain link fence for the first time or have worked in the industry for years, there are a few things you should know before starting your project. These include how to measure the Post hole size and gauge, how to prepare the area, and how to use the correct tools for the job.

Cost of a chain-link fence

The cost of a chain-link fence installation varies depending on the size and quality of the mesh used. The thicker the wire, the more expensive it will be, but the fence will be much stronger. Gauge is also an important factor. Lower gauge wires cost less than higher gauge wires, but the wires are thicker and stronger.

If you’re going to install your own fence, consider hiring a professional crew. These workers can often finish your fence in a day or two. They’ll have the right tools and know-how to maneuver around obstacles. Plus, they’ll be less likely to cut themselves on exposed wire or struggle with the posts. This will save you time, delivery fees, and even tool rental. Choosing a professional crew can help you get a better fence for less money, and it’s definitely a good idea if you’re on a budget.

Post hole size

The proper post hole size is critical for the structural strength of your chain link fence. In most cases, the hole must be ten inches wide at the top and twelve inches wide at the bottom. The actual hole size depends on local weather and the size of your posts. In some cases, you might need to dig larger holes or use longer ones.

In some cases, it may be necessary to consult a professional to determine the proper post hole size. Regardless, it is essential to keep in mind that the depth of the hole must be at least two feet. The depth of the hole is critical because the posts may bend if they are not set properly. After digging, backfill the hole with soil to keep the posts in place.

Gauge measurement

Whether you’re planning to build a chain link fence for residential use or for commercial use, you’ll need to know what gauge to purchase. All posts have an inside and an outside diameter. The outside diameter is measured from the outside edge of the post wall to the inside edge of the opposite wall. The inside diameter depends on the thickness of the wall. Generally, the chain link posts that are used for residential purposes are 2 3/8 inches in diameter.

Chain link fences come in different gauges and grades, so make sure to understand what you need before purchasing any chain link fencing. The smaller the gauge, the thicker the chain link fabric. ASTM specifications suggest that the wire used for residential chain link fences be 11 1/2 gauge or smaller. Fences six feet tall and higher should have 11 gauge wire.

Preparation

Before installing the chain link fence, it is important to level the area where you plan to install it. You should also make sure that all existing structures are cleared out of the way. Also, you must level the area around the posts, which should be two to three meters apart. Once you have done this, you can start digging the holes for the posts. The holes should be about 80-120 cm deep and 30 cm wide. The best method is to use a manual drill.

The next step in chain link fence installation is the installation of the top rail. This must be installed on all line posts. When installing a fence, it is recommended to check the height of the line posts and trim them if they are higher than the top rail. You can also slip a pipe under the loop cap if the posts are too short. Sometimes, a top tension wire is substituted for a top rail. If this is the case, make sure to brace the terminal posts to prevent a fall or other damage.

Permits

A chain link fence permit is required in some states and municipalities to construct a chain link fence. These permits must be obtained from your local building department. The application must include a fence plan with construction details and elevation details. These permits are valid for 120 days or four months from the date of approval. After this time, you must renew the permit by paying the required fee.

The application can include drawings or photographs of the proposed fence. Some municipalities may also require written consent from neighbors and a sketch plan.
