Govt appoints Viral V Acharya as RBI Deputy Governor

The Union Government has appointed Viral V. Acharya as new Deputy Governor at the Reserve Bank of India. He was a professor of Economics in the Department of Finance at the New York University. He will hold a regular 3 year tenure. His appointment was cleared by the Cabinet Appointments Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
Acharya comes from an academic background similar to Raghuram Rajan. Before Acharya’s appointment to the RBI, he has been serving as CV Starr professor of economics at the New York University Stern School of Business since 2008. As per his profile on the New York University site, Acharya’s research interests stand in “the regulation of banks and financial institutions, credit risk and valuation of corporate debt, corporate finance and asset pricing with a focus on the effects of liquidity risk.” He is known for his research in theoretical & empirical analysis of systemic risks of the financial segment, its regulation and genesis in government-induced distortions. His papers have been published in renowned finance journals. He got various awards, the latest one was the ‘Rising Star in Finance Award’.
An a former student of IIT, Mumbai, with a degree of BTech in CS & Engineering in 1995 and Doctor of Philosophy in Finance from NYU-Stern in 2001.
